House Tour: Bedroom Updates

Slowly I've been trying to update the blog with a post of each room in its current state.  I've done a living room update, a kitchen update and our son's room update and today its time for our master room update.  I think out of all the rooms in our house this is the one I'm itching to change the most.  But before I get into what I want to change I'll focus on what we have done so far.

I love the light and airy feeling in our bedroom, something we started working on from day one when we painted the paneling and installed this ikea chandelier.  Recently I changed out the curtains for a lighter option and I'm liking the change.  These were the curtains we used to have in our living room so it was a free option and gave me a better idea of what I wanted to do in this room.

When we first moved in I really wanted a yellow and gray bedroom.  Now that we have been here for a while, I'm ready for something different so these side tables/drawers are going to be painted soon.  I'm also currently on the hunt for a different paint color for the walls.  I still want something in the gray family but more on the greige side.  I think some small changes like that will really make a big difference - at least for me.

Another big project for us coming in this room is installing new flooring.  This is the last of the carpet in our house and it needs to go.  This space is also really needing some better storage solutions.  Its a small room and I'm really great with that but I need to figure out the most efficient way to use the space we have.  I love the idea of building some sort of storage unit along the wall.

This space started dark and dingy and now is much brighter and lighter - things that I really like about this room.  Something I have definitely learned is that as you go, your style preference will change.  This room is in that stage of trying to piece together the things that we really like.  Sometimes it takes living in a space for a while to really figure out what that is.  So changes to our room are coming soon.

Living Room Update

This blog is in real need of me updating the permanent pages - like the  home tour, projects, etc.  Its so neglected.  So to help get this blog up to date with all things home I decided to do a quick room by room post update that will allow me to finally begin working on that.  Today I'm starting with the first room in our home, the living room.  Its probably been shown the most here more recently but now its officially up to date in my brain and helps me move on to other posts - so here goes round one of home spaces - the living room.

This space is probably one of my favorites in our house.  Its cozy & quaint, lived in & simple and full of old & new - just how I like it.  

So in the last several years since living here we haven't done a lot of "work" necessarily in this room - its been more about adding the decor we like.  The first big project we did in this room was to paint all the trim white and the entire room a new fresh neutral.  I still love it.  We also changed out the ceiling fan not too long ago which really helped to update to space as well.

Some things I have never really posted about on the blog was adding the wall shelving (ikea), finally finding neutral patterned curtains I love (they were a Tuesday Morning find), switching out the tv stand (also ikea) and finding the most perfect sofa for this space.  The sofa we chose was the karlstad corner sofa from ikea.  I can't say enough about how much we love it (or maybe how much we love ikea).  Its super comfy and really durable - which is great when you have small kids living on it and big kids visiting often.  You can choose any arrangement you want to work for your space so its really versatile.  Its one of our favorite things we have purchased for our home.

I can't stop picking up cute pillows for our sofa...its probably getting a little out of hand.  The striped silhouette wall art is a little project I did way back and still one of my faves.  I evan have a little post for the monogram wall art on the shelf.  The lamp is from Target and the little cabinet is an antique piece I've had forever.

This navy chair is another addition we have had for about a year, a little target find.  Recently I posted about making the framed instagram collage, a really easy and fun project.  And also, Silas' own personal project - the "I love dinosaurs" chalkboard sign.  I'm still working on adding more to the walls in here - there seems to be a lot of blank spaces.  For some reason hanging things on the wall is the most difficult thing for me to do in a space.  We've been here four years now and just this year I hung something up on the wall - I know, settle down.

Oh, and the flooring - original hardwood floors we found under the carpet...such a great score.

This little space has come a long way since moving in!  I love to see the changes.  I definitely have a few more things on my to do list for this space but its one of the most finished rooms we probably have.   The room gets used a ton, by us, family, students, community groups and more and we love having a comfy place to share with others.

Living Room Update:

House Tour - Updates

I wasn't really sure where to begin with so many changes and projects currently happening at our house.  So, why not start with a mini update.  If you want a quick reminder of how things looked when we moved in and how everything was, you can check out our house tour page.  I'll update that page soon, but for now here's a little glimpse of what we call home.

Can I just say that I am currently loving our living room.  Its cozy, inviting, very much us and I love being in here.  And yes, that's an original hardwood floor.  We unearthed it several months back and it was a much welcomed discovery.  I'll give a rundown post on the wood flooring situation soon.

Our living room and kitchen are completely open to each other in the front of our house.  I love the openness and its great for a small home.   

New flooring is abundant in our house, including a new tiled kitchen floor (new as in last March).  

Also if you look close you can see the trim molding that still needs to be done...all in good time.

My current favorite room to work on - Silas' room.  We've painted, pulled out carpet, replaced lights, added new artwork, etc...and my list is still pretty long on what else we want to do.  

I have let Silas help make the decisions along the way and its been a fun project for both of us.  

Hallway bath...nothing new going on in here but I still love a good white shower curtain.

This room is completely different, the once spare/guest room has been taken over by Silas and is now a playroom.  I am constantly working on the organization in this small space - constantly.

I have purged (mostly while Silas is gone, shhh don't tell him), gathered, grouped and I'm still in the process of making this all work.

Currently I have just been using what we have on hand for organization except for a few bins I grabbed at Target.  But soon I'm going to add in some much needed shelving to really give this room some greatly needed storage space.

We still love our chalkboard doors!  And, yes we do have a Disney countdown currently taking place.  We are actually a lot closer since this photo was taken so - I.cant.wait.

Our bedroom, laundry and bathroom were left off, there isn't much change in those rooms as of right now but I have so many things on my list to do in those spaces.  But now that we are all nicely acquainted again with our home we can start getting serious about the details.  Can't wait to overshare with you soon!  Thanks for stopping by today!  

Working on the Guest Room

Do you guys have a room or area in your house that turns into the storage spot or dumping ground for things that you don't know what to do with?  Well we do.  Its called our guest room.  Once a room becomes that area in the house, its so hard to get control over it.  Finally over the weekend we regained control over our guest room and its back in a livable state again.  So since I rarely share that space on the blog, I thought I would start today.  I actually really love this room.  It has a lot of our sentimental and vintage pieces living in there and is probably the most girly spot in our house.  Like the rest of our home though, I still have lots of things that I need or want to do to make this room complete.

Like I said, we still have lots to do...

For example, the walls are completely bare and its even more clear in photos how badly I need to fill in these blank walls.  I also really would like to hang some curtains - maybe even diy some.  That would really help bring some softness and warmth to the space.

I love all of the little vintage and personal things in here.  Pretty much every item has some sort of story or meaning to us.  I love rooms like that.

I keep a lot of my craft items in here as well.  I probably have way too many jars and such so I love using them to store things like pens and chalk.  I even have an antique butter dish that works great for Silas' crayons.

Oh, my little luggage rack found its place in the guest room and our laminate bookshelf that I painted a while back is still going strong.  

So that's a little peek into our guest room.  I have some work to do and can't wait to share the progress as I go along.  Stay tuned!

Exterior House Tour

It's such a beautiful day today so why not spend some time outside enjoying the beautiful day God has made and the outdated exterior of our house that someone built in the early 60's?  I don't think our house has seen an update to the outside since the 60's, it's in major need of some updated curb appeal.  So here is a tour of everything we plan on changing (and a few keeps).

The color - gross.  Probably the number one thing I can't stand about this house.  The house will be painted in the very near future, that has been a plan since day one.  One of our students aptly remarked that our house color was the same as Dwight Schrute's shirt, need I say more?  Except maybe that "I am faster than 80% of all snakes" (Dwight Schrute).

Here is our lovely pebbled walkway with half the pebbles missing. 

The next stop on the tour is the thing that ranks a very close second in what I can't stand most about the outside, these plants.  Since when did NC become a tropical or desert location?  That's all I can think of when I look at these plants and it just doesn't fit.  For those of you who might like these, you are more than welcome to come dig them up for us and take them away.  Something that is surprising to me is that there is not one flower planted in our yard.  This house has been living here for 50 years and no one has planted one flower - odd.

This is Justin's favorite thing, the screen door.  Ok, just kidding.  He hates it.  We do however have plans one day to replace the door and build some kind of porch out front, I'm excited about that.

Ooooh, our lighting -it  even came equipped with a yellow bulb - our house just oozes modern.

The right side of the house is actually an addition and it has a different kind of siding.  Notice the bubbled up paint, yeah that didn't happen until we moved in and had monsoon rain.

Yay! Something I love, the beautiful tree in our front yard.  I love looking out the front and seeing this tree.  It also creates wonderful shade.  I can imagine Silas climbing this tree one day.  This one is a keeper.

Our little backyard, it's fenced which is a plus and has a little shed - two things we also like.

So there you have it, you now have seen where all of our free time this summer/fall will go.  In the meantime Silas is working hard on choosing the right exterior paint color.  We will let you know what he chooses soon.  Have a great weekend!
